**Quercus velutina** – whose species name comes from the Latin for "velvety" – is a member of the red oak group, native to a broad swath of eastern and central North America. It's often called the black oak, or sometimes the eastern black oak. Before that name stuck, it was known as yellow oak, a reference to the yellow pigment found in its inner bark.
In the northern part of its range, this tree stays relatively modest, reaching about 20–25 meters tall and 90 centimeters in diameter. Farther south and in the central part of its range, it can grow much larger, with known heights up to 42 meters. Its leaves are arranged alternately on the twig, measuring 10–20 centimeters long, with 5–7 bristle-tipped lobes separated by deep, U-shaped notches. The upper surface is a shiny, deep green, while the underside is yellowish-brown and covered in clumps of stellate hairs. For identification, look for very deep U-shaped sinuses on sun-grown leaves and velvety buds coated in white hairs.
Black oak is monoecious. The male flowers develop from the leaf axils of the previous year, and their catkins appear in April or May, either before or at the same time as the current year's leaves. The female flowers grow in the axils of the current year's leaves, either singly or in spikes of two to many. The fruit is an acorn, which can appear alone or in clusters of two to five. It's about one-third enclosed in a scaly cup and takes two years to mature. When ripe, from late August to late October depending on location, the acorns are brown, medium-sized, broadly rounded, and have a large cap that covers nearly half the nut.
Black oak's range includes all coastal states from Maine to Texas, reaching inland as far as Michigan, Ontario, Minnesota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma, and eastern Texas. It grows on all aspects and slope positions but does best in coves and on middle and lower slopes with northerly and easterly aspects. In the southern Appalachians, it can be found up to 1,200 meters in elevation. In southern New England, it prefers cool, moist soils; elsewhere, it thrives on warm, moist soils. The most common soils for black oak are udalfs and udolls, derived from glacial materials, sandstones, shales, and limestone.
