Populus tremuloides, commonly known as quaking aspen, trembling aspen, or American aspen, is a deciduous tree native to cooler areas of North America. It is the most widely distributed tree in North America, found from Canada to central Mexico, and is the defining species of the aspen parkland biome in the Prairie Provinces of Canada and extreme northwest Minnesota. The species is noted for its smooth pale bark, glossy green leaves that turn golden to yellow in autumn, and its ability to propagate through roots to form large clonal groves.

Populus tremuloides is a tall, fast-growing tree, usually 15–18 meters at maturity, with smooth whitish bark marked by thick black horizontal scars and prominent black knots. The leaves are nearly round, 4–6 cm in diameter, with a flattened petiole that causes them to twist in the wind, giving the tree its common name 'quaking aspen.' The species is dioecious, with separate male and female clones, and produces catkins in early spring followed by pendulous strings of capsules containing minute seeds embedded in cottony fluff. Trees as young as 2–3 years may begin seed production, but significant output starts at 10 years, with best production between ages 50 and 70.
