Quercus alba

Long-lived hardwood of eastern North America, valued for wood and wildlife.

Quercus alba, commonly called the white oak, ranks among the most significant hardwoods in eastern and central North America. Its range stretches from Minnesota, Ontario, Quebec, and southern Maine down to northern Florida and eastern Texas. While the name suggests white bark, the trunk is almost always a light gray; the "white" actually refers to the pale undersides of the leaves. In forest settings, the tree can grow impressively tall, whereas in open areas it develops a short, massive form with broad, wide-angled branches.

At maturity, a typical white oak reaches 24 to 30 meters (80–100 feet) in height. Forest-grown specimens become much taller than those in the open, which stay shorter but bulkier. The tallest known white oak, the Mingo Oak, stood over 200 feet tall with a trunk height of 44.2 meters (145 feet) before it was cut down in 1938. A tree’s crown spread often equals its height, though individuals at high altitudes may shrink to the size of small shrubs. The bark is light ash-gray and peels in patches from various parts of the trunk. According to Chris Bolgiano’s *The Appalachian Forest*, the largest white oak ever felled in West Virginia measured 13 feet (4.0 meters) thick at its base.

White oaks typically live 200 to 300 years, but some far exceed that. The Wye Oak in Maryland was estimated at over 450 years old when a thunderstorm toppled it in 2002. Another famous specimen, the Basking Ridge white oak in New Jersey, was thought to be over 600 years old when it died in 2016. That tree had a base circumference of 8 meters (25 feet), a circumference of 5 meters (16 feet) at 1.2 meters (4 feet) above ground, a height of 23 meters (75 feet), and a branch spread of 38 meters (125 feet). Claimed as the oldest oak in the United States, it showed signs of decline in the mid-2010s and was taken down in 2017.

Sexual maturity begins around age 20, but large acorn crops do not appear until the tree is about 50 years old, and yields vary yearly. Acorns spoil quickly after ripening—only 10% of six-month-old seeds germinate. Insects and animals often consume the entire crop in lean years, leaving no seeds to sprout. The acorns are usually sessile, 15 to 25 mm (½–1 inch) long, and fall in early October.

White oak wood is strong, tough, heavy, fine-grained, and durable. Its closed cellular structure, due to tyloses, makes it water- and rot-resistant, leading to its use in wine and whiskey barrels, shipbuilding, construction, and Native American basketry.
