Nothofagus

Genus of southern beeches dominant in Southern Hemisphere forests.

Nothofagus, commonly called southern beeches, is a group of around 35 to 38 tree and shrub species that grow naturally across the Southern Hemisphere. Their range includes southern South America (Chile and Argentina), eastern and southeastern Australia, New Zealand, New Guinea, and New Caledonia. In many of the temperate forests within these regions, they are the dominant ecological species. The genus has an extensive fossil record—including leaves, cupules, and pollen—that stretches back to the late Cretaceous period, with fossils found in Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica, and South America.

The leaves of Nothofagus can be toothed or smooth-edged, and the plants are either evergreen or deciduous. Their fruit is a small, flattened or triangular nut, held in cupules that contain one to seven nuts. Many individual trees are extremely old. At one time, some populations were thought to be unable to reproduce sexually under current conditions, relying only on clonal reproduction through suckering, and were considered remnant forests from a cooler era. However, it has since been shown that sexual reproduction is possible.

The genus was first formally described in 1850 by Carl Ludwig Blume, who published the description in his book *Museum botanicum Lugduno-Batavum*. The name *Nothofagus* means "false beech," chosen by Blume to distinguish these species from the beeches of the Northern Hemisphere. Historically, they were placed in the family Fagaceae, but genetic testing revealed they are genetically distinct, and they are now placed in their own family, Nothofagaceae.
